Next meeting Sunday June 8th, 12pm
Annual Spring Picnic
Our Spring Picnic will be held at CNYOS Member Rick Braue's home near Poland, NY on the second Sunday in June. (directions) The club will supply dinner ware, Members A-M can bring desserts and Members N-Z can bring a main course item. If you have a specialty you would like to bring but it doesn't fit the above format, ignore it and bring your favorite goodies! The picnic will be held rain or shine. Rick has a large enough garage that it can hold everybody and everything. Bring a comfortable chair to sit in and if you have a certain beverage you would like feel free to bring it with you. There is a rumor that if Member Charles Ufford is able to attend then there may be a native orchid jaunt right around the corner. There will be a Show Table and raffle table, so if you have anything you would like to show off or raffle bring it along. Rick says that anyone can arrive after 10am, and that eating will commence at 12 noon. People can arrive and eat at anytime during the afternoon that they choose.
Please note that we will be having an extra club meeting on the first Sunday in August (August 3rd). Our 2008 Annual Fall Show and Sale presently scheduled for the first weekend of October conflicts with our October meeting. We need to take care of many show-related details. We will be holding a mini-display setup instruction and contest, please bring as many flowering orchids for the show table, and have them staked as if they were going to be judged in a show. The August meeting will replace our October meeting.
Also note that our September meeting will be held on the second Sunday of the month (Sept. 14th) because of the Labor Day holiday.
Our newbie orchid display table did very well at the Rochester and Binghamton area orchid shows! The CNYOS club received the blue ribbon for best orchid club display of over 11 plants at both shows! This just shows you that you don't have to be an old hand to set up a club display at the shows. Anyone can do a display and do well at it, the only requirement is a little enthusiasm and maybe a little style sense. Congratulations! Thanks also to all of the volunteers who supplied plants and time/effort to make the displays happen and look so nicely.
There is a new Newsletter Editor on the block! Member Eva Galson has very kindly volunteered to do the newsletter, much to former Editor Charles Ufford's extreme relief! If you have any ideas for the newsletter please let her know. She is 'retired', so she has tons of time (smile) to spend on the newsletter and is open to suggestions. We have also had a few other volunteers step forward and we all would like to extend our appreciation to them as well! Three cheers and extra cookies from the snack table for you...........
Our website now hosts three photo galleries. One is our Virtual Showtable page, which also has a section for you to display your growing areas. The second is the Show Pictures page where images from our orchid shows can be viewed, and the third gallery is the Native Orchids page. Several members and friends go on orchid treks each year, and this is where they can post and you can view their pictures. Sometimes they also take pictures of other interesting plants they find along the way.
If you are a neighboring orchid society member (doesn't have to be nearby) you can register and upload pictures to your own galleries as well. We just ask that all pictures be of orchids that match the gallery type. If you are a member of a neighboring orchid society and would like to post pictures, please contact Charles Ufford for details.
Don't forget to bring your flowering orchids to the next meeting!
Also a reminder that our newsletter and website have a section where Members can post a list of orchids or orchid-related items they wish to sell/buy/trade. If you are a neighboring orchid society (including Canada) and will be having an orchid auction, these can be listed there as well as on our events calendar. Send requests to Newsletter Editor Eva Galson and your list will be put in the newsletter and on our website. Please submit your request at least two weeks before the next scheduled meeting - Thanks!
Hope to see you at our next meeting or event!
See the CNYOS calendar for other regional orchid-related events!
